Missing drives

Is there a limitation I am unaware of with converter starter edition? I am trying to clone a server that has 3 drives but only the first 2 show up on the "Source Data" screen.

Thanks,

Mike

I've never heard of that, the limitations of Starter are you cannot do cold cloning and you can only do a single migration at a time. Are you drives all basic? Ntfs or fat? what OS?

Sorry. It is W2K3 Std 32bit all 3 drives are basic ntfs. It is an exchange 2k3 server with an os drive, log drive, and database drive. The database drive is not showing up.

Interestingly enough the 2 that do show up are really partitions on disk 0. The one not showing up is on disk 1. It is a 2 channel scsi controller and the 2nd channel is not showing up.

Can you post your log file in C:\WINDOWS\Temp\vmware-temp

This may be a dumb question but would there be a valid log file? I have not gone past the drive selection screen.

Yes there will be a log, it creates one as soon as you start Converter and choose Import, it shoudl have some entries like below that shows what it sees. It should be called vmware-converter-#.log

Stupid question. Are these disks newly added? How about a reboot?

same disks that have been in there for about 1.5 years. Have not rebooted it.

Here is the chunk of log that looks like it shows the error. Have no idea what it means though.

By the way thanks for the help. It is appreciated.

I think it is this error that may be hanging it up.

Are you getting any disk errors in the event logs at all?

It could also be a permissions issue, are you a local admin on the server?

No disk errors and I am using a domain admin account.

This one has me confused. I'm hesitant to suggest this, but can you schedule a chkdsk /f on a reboot for each disk? Are you getting good backups?

It is a production Exchange server so I could only do it in the middle of the night. I don't want to dig that whole if something goes wrong.

We are getting good backups.

I just wanted to clone it to test all of the DST patches that are causing a lot of Exchange problems. Looks like I will be winging it.

Yeah, probably not the best idea.

If you're getting good backups, maybe a new VM with a restore would be serve you better.

I wonder if Exchange has some locking on the disks while it's running, that is not allowing converter to get the access it needs. Maybe a cold conversion would work better, but you would need to purchase for that.

Good luck. I am out of ideas. Sorry...

Thanks for the help. Just an fyi... I was able to hot clone a different E2K3 server. It would be difficult to tell what the exact difference is. One is on a Dell one is on an HP. They are on different patch levels, etc...

Oh and I am going to give the reboot thing a try tonight. If it resolves the issue I will post it. If I do not post then assume it didn't.

That's cool, thanks for letting us know. I wonder if there is a difference between the RAID controllers between the two that is causing the issue? It's a stretch, but who knows.

Try stopping the Exchange services. These services can cause volume locks on the disk (i.e. Store service) which converter sees as a similar failure because it can't gain full access to the volume.

Did anyone ever solve this issue? I am having the same issue with an IBM Blade/IBM SAN - same error message in the log. A second identical Blade/San connection P2V's perfectly - drive configuration is identical on both. Please help.

Thanks,

Perry

I had the same issue where the drives will not show when doing a Win P2V and it didn't matter if I used the integrated or standalone latest versions.

The fix it to installed the standalone client on the source machine and the do the conversion from the source selecting "this computer" as the source

Don't forget to disable anything not needed and to stop any services you don't need like SQL or EXCH, Antivirus and so on
