XEN VM to ESXi4

Hello,

have anyone converted a virtual Windows 2003 32Bit server running on XEN host (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) to ESXi4 using the Standalone Converter?

Will it simply work like it does for P2V or might there be any issues. The Windows server is quite critical so I would like to be prepared

if there is any issues during/after conversion.

Thanks,

Thomas

I would try to convert the VHD with Starwind v2v Converter and then try to patch with Converter 3.0.3

What do you mean by this: try to patch with Converter 3.0.3 ?

every P2V is a two steps process: creating an image + patching the drivers

The first part can be done with V2V converter from Starwind

Second maybe possible if you use "configure machine" option in Converter 3.0.3

I'm confused Smiley Happy Maybe you didn't understand me or I don't understand you Smiley Happy

I don't wan't to convert the XEN host into VMware, I want a virtual Windows server running virtually on the XEN domu into our VMware cluster, what is the supported way to do this?

BTW. We are running version 4.0.1 of converter not 3.0.3

Thanks for your replies!

I think I understood the problem ... why you ask ?

BTW. We are running version 4.0.1 of converter not 3.0.3

IMHO you should have both

Two ways to convert a XEN VM to VMware:

hotclone: install VMware Converter somewhere - for win2k3 use 3.0.3 - and select the running XEN-VM as source.

coldclone: power down the XEN VM and convert the VHD with Starwind v2v converter - then patch with VMware Converter to adjust drivers

So you mean that I can't use the latest version of VMware converter running on my workstation? I'd rather do the conversion with the VMware converter than with Starwind converter.

So it will work if I use the VMware converter as I do for converting physical hosts to virtual machines into VMware?

you need to decide if you need a coldclone or if a hotclone will be enough

that does not make a lot of sense to me - but feel free to try it.

As already mentioned I would tyry with 3.0.3 first
