Add ESXi 5 standard license to host but no storage vmotion feature

I've 2 new IBM blade server installed with ESXi 5 U3. The Vsphere 5 standard and vcenter 5 standard license newly purchased.

The weird thing is after adding the standard license, the storage vmotion feature is not included.

Thus i cannot perform storage vmotion.

I did log a call to vmware licensing, and they told me is a technical issue. It should be licensing issue as the feature was not included after adding the standard license.

Anyone experience it before?

Hi sweehan,

I think that Storage vMotion is available in Standard edition since version 5.1

Hi Vlho,

My host is installed with 5.0 U3. My understanding is standard edition will have vmotion and storage vmotion. That's why I purchase Standard edition

Hi,

update your vCenter and your hosts to 5.5. Then you have storage vMotion with the standard edition.

vickyvision2020 : the whitepaper you linked is not referring to 5.0. It's from 2013. 5.0 Release was 2011.

The KB linked by vlho states it: Storage vMotion is available in vSphere Standard 5.1 and 5.5

Hi Tim,

First line of this guide states that """

This guide provides an overview of the licensing, pricing, and

packaging for VMware vSphere® with Operations Management™

5 and VMware vSphere 5"

Can you please confirm and clarify?

Hey,

these whitepapers are always updated and are written for the latest minor release of vSphere, so this is now for 5.5.

On the bottom right of the last page, you see the date when this document was released: 08/13

vSphere 5.5 was released 07/13

Thanks for clarification Tim

but do not you think VMware should specify it to vSphere 5.5 to avoid such confusions?

Hi

Welcome to the communities.

Please refer this.

The new vSphere licensing model for both vSphere 5.0 and vSphere 5.1 is based on processor licences. Each physical processor (CPU) in a server needs to have a vSphere 5 processor licence. There is no limitation on the number of VMs or the amount of virtual memory (vRAM) on each licensed processor. There is no restriction on the number of physical cores or the amount of physical RAM. If you purchase vSphere with Operations Management the two licences are tied together and behave as a single entitlement. A Support and Subscription (SnS) contract is required for every vSphere edition purchased.
