Backup issues with VMFS 3 datastores

Issue - VCB backup is failing for any VM with a disk size greater than maximum supported by an VMFS3 datastore with a block size of 4 MB.

Suggestions i have read on some KBs is to upgrade the VMFS to version 5. Can i do this without any impact for my ESXi 4.1 servers? What are the precautions I may need to take before doing something like a Datastore filesystem update...

VMFS 5 is not supported on vSphere 4.  you will need to upgrade your Hosts and vCenter to vSphere 5 before you can use VMFS 5.

The thing that is baffling me is how you have managed to create a VM with a disksize greater that 1TB on a VMFS3 partition formated with a 4MB block size
