Can't delete unused Datastore

I'm new to ESXi. I'm trying to set up a small four VM server. I'm using VMWare ESXi 4.0 Update 1. I created a datastore using the default of 1M block size not realizing that it would limit disks to 256GB. I hadn't done anything else with that datastore - not even created a disk on it, when I attempted to delete it so I could recreate it with a 2M block size (it's a 500GB disk). When I attempted to delete it, I got an error about the resource being in use (I don't know the exact error. I don't get that particular one any more).

I have tried doing this in maintenance mode, with the same exact errors. I have restarted the host (both in and out of maintenance mode), and still get the same errors. I even removed all VMs from the host, and still got the error when trying to delete this empty datastore.

If I delete the partition from the disk using fdisk and attempt to create a new datastore in vSphere client, I get "Error during the configuration of the host: Unable to create Filesystem, please see VMkernel log for more details." After that, the old datastore shows up again. If I then try to delete it again, I get, "Error during the configuration of the host: DestroyVmfsDatastore: can't delete partition 1 on lun t10.ATA_____WDC_WD5002ABYS2D02B1B0________________________WD2DWCASYC077094"

When I look in /vmfs/volumes, the only things in the datastore are:

/vmfs/volumes/4c4374a2-d936b10e-22d1-001517ed4b84 # ls -la
