Drobo via USB Hangs on ESXi 4.1 update 1 on PowerEdge 1950

I have three two white box ESXi boxes that will happily accept a 4 bay Drobo as a USB device.  It actually works flawlessly.  However, I've got a fully support PowerEdge 1950 running ESXi 4.1 update 1 that whenever I connect the Drobo to any guest it hangs in an oddly miserable way, but as soon as I remove the USB device in the by editing the guest, the guest behaives normally.  I've connected a single USB hard drive and have had not issues.

The white boxes boot via CF and SATA. The 1950 boots from a USB stick. Other than that they all have very similar hardware.  I've tried installing a PCI-E USB 2 controller. The Drobo's still recognized, but still hangs the guest OS's.

Any ideas?

I did just notice that the white boxes are running 4.1 26027 and the Poweredge 1950 is running 348481. Perhaps that's the difference?
