ESXi 5.5 Free version - Feature VSMP not licensed, requires 12 have 8

Installed ESXi 5.5 Freeware version. Tried to create Linux VM with 12 cores, got an error:

Feature VSMP not licensed, requires 12 have 8.

I thought the cpu/memory limits were removed in 5.5.

Im using the same license I had for ESXi 5.0, is that the problem?

The limitation of 8 vCPUs still apply for the free Hypervisor. However, physical limitations have been removed.
