Hello.
vCenter Server 5 can manage ESX/ESXi 4.1 and some ESX/ESXi 4.0 hosts. VMware Data Recovery 2.0 will only work with ESXi 5. Check the Product Interoperability Matrix for more info.
Good Luck!
Thank ypo for the help. I did go to the matrix. I am still unclear about one thing. The vcenter appliance is not listed. this appliance will run both versions correct? also do you know what type of failure happens upon running vdr appliance on 4.1

Ty for pointing out the limitations. The place i considering is a smb. the limitations would not be a issue. the question dtill remains is this appliance backwards compatible to esxi 4.1

Hi
I couldn't find exact answer for your question but I found this sentence :
For VMware vCenter Server Appliance installation, see the vSphere Installation and Setup publication. The vCenter Sever Appliance is supported only on ESX/ESXi 4.0 and 4.1 andESXi 5.0
If it can run on ESX 4.x I assumes that it can support those versions

Thanks for the help. I have so many 4.1 systems out there. I will never have the time to upgrade to 5 but was hoping to mix the 2.
Have a great weekend
