Oracle License for ESX environment?

hi All,

I'd like to ask Oracle DBMS's Licensing policy on virtualized host.

If I create 2 Oracle running VMs(with 2vCPU) on vSphere installed Dell R900 4socket server,

How many and What knds of Oracle DBMS licenses are required?

Noone involved with VMWare gets to decide this - you should post in an Oracle forum.

That's what I get as an answer from an consultant working at an company mainly dealing with Oracle (translated into English):

You need to know the number of sockets to know the edition you need (SE-ONe ; SE oder EE). You need to know the number of cores as there is a multi-core-factor: Intel/AMD is 0,5. So if you have 6 (ESX) hosts with two dualcore processors each (=24 cores) you have to buy licenses for 12.

But to be sure I would suggest you ask an Oracle dealer for an offer.

thanks AWo for your reply.

I guess Oracle licensing should be calculated on Physical Socket/cores basis regardless of virtual enviroment.

Even 1VM has only 2VCPU,

should have license which is based ESX host's Physical socket/core .

is it right?

As far as I understood him and from reqading in other forums you have to license every possible socket/core the guest may run on. That means if you have six hosts with 2 sockets each in your farm 12 is the base to calculate with.
