Power Off ESX Server

If I run the shutdown command on one of my ESX server, will the VM's migrate off before it shuts down?

Hello.

No, you should put it in maintenance mode first.  That will evacuate the VMs first.

Good Luck!

...unless you have a standalone host and have the startup/shutdown options enabled and configured.

Let me ask this in a different way. I am not worried about how your supposed to migrate machines off the host....at all. I have 5 hosts in a cluster with DRS on. I want to know what happens when I run the shutdown command on one of the hosts. What happens to the VM's on that host I shutdown?

If you just issue the shutdown command on the host, then the guests will shutdown (not gracefully) with it.
