Question on Datastores-how many on single system?

I am rebuilding a host server that houses that datastore as well. No San available but you have to use what you got. Since 5 can do more than 2TB and I can have a 4 TB partition with 8 1 gig drives in a Raid 10 config would one large datastore be all right. I know that no actual vm can be bigger than 2 TB but that is not an issue for now.

thanks

gary

I think max you can have is 256 datastores.

May I ask where can you get more information about this? I just want to be sure that the max is 256 datastores.

I dont like 4 tb datastores on local disks - if you ever have an issue with that datastore you can not create a full backup during the night.

Last week I had to recover data from a 3.2 Tb datastore and could not even start my regulat routine as we had no time to take a dd-image of that datastore.
In case my customer had used several 1 Tb datastores I would have been able to create an image during the night.

The max VMFSVolumes (datastores) per ESXi 5 host is 256.
