Removing Faulty CPU from Esxi host in a cluster

We have cluster consisting of 3 Hosts. 2 Hosts of same specs and 1 is of higher spec which are clustered in EVC mode.

Unfortunately one of the Hosts CPU (CPU1 has an internal error IERR) went faulty and stuck at BIOS and all the VMs inside it as well (not accessibly). Initially host consists of 2 CPUs.

We wanted to know, can we remove the faulty CPU and power on the host? so that we can move the VMs to other hosts until its fixed. will the host work with the reduced resources ?

Will removing the CPU and powering on causes any issue with the existing cluster? of affect the VMs inside it?

Hello,

That type of error is in the vast majority of cases events detected by CPU1 and related to problems with the underlying hardware, software (for example firmware) or an unfortunate combination of both, but very rarely due to a malfunction of the CPU itself, simply removing the first CPU (and it takes a little manual skill to avoid causing further damage) just as usually (I don't want to be absolute but in all the ones I've used it has always been like this) it prevents the system from starting even though the second one is present.

Simply put, your specific question is not related to VMware technologies but to your system(s), of unknown characteristics, as such.

Ferdinando
