I have 2 IBM same model servers her - 7233 6RG
one shows
Processor Sockets: 4
Processor Cores per Socket: 6
the other
Processor Sockets: 8
Processor Cores per Socket: 3
HT if not being used on both machines.
The first information would be correct. The wrong one is using the double number of licenses.
I have no idea what's wrong. Haven't found an option in the BIOS which says "yeah I'ld resolve your problem"
Any Ideas?
BIOS version is the same?
ESXi is updated?

I am migrating from ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 atm
the one with correct numbers is ESX 4.0 - which is missing the updates released in June
I think we had the problem before but I never really realized it as there were still enough licenses
but now another host was added and the missing licenses came up
ok well that sucks now
updated the ESX 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 without any other changes
Now it also show's 8 Sockets with 3 Cores ?:|
Even though there's nothing specific in IBM's release notes about BIOS version 1.15 and ESX compatibility, it may make sense to upgrade to the latest BIOS.
System x3850 M2 (7233) and VMware ESX Server

(Please double check that this is the correct one for your system!)
The interesting part is, VMware's HCL mentions BIOS release A3E157TUS, which is not listed on IBM's web page.

yeah I've checked the BIOS release notes as well but found nothing for ESX
both hosts have been upgraded to BIOS 1.15
both still show 8 Sockets
I'm having the same issue.
Boot with Ubuntu and it sees 4-6core processors so I believe this is a VMware problem not BIOS.

Working on opening an SR but having trouble gathering the right info.
booting another Ubuntu + XenServer shows the correct numbers.
I have already opened the SR and send logs yesterday. Hope they could solve the problem very soon.
after I had telephon call with VMware Support we have solved the problem.
seems a BIOS Option caused the error.
Open up the BIOS and open up "Advanced Setup - CPU Settings" and switch the cluster setting from Logical to Physical
Boot up and everything works fine.
Confirming that on a IBM x3950 M2 (7233AC2) this fixed the issue. It was set to Logical by default.
ESX was reporting 4 sockets, 3 cores per socket. Setting that setting to Physical it now reports 2 sockets, 6 cores per socket. BIOS 1.12.
