one vhdx with two partitions on Windows server 2008 R2

Hello all,

esxi v6

i have windows server 2008R2 VM, it has one (01) vhdx with two partitions ( C:\ [SYSTEM, D:\ [DATA])

I need to extend (C:\) partition where OS is installed

Can i just move data from  (D:\) partition and then delete it. So i will have unallocated space, then with disk management on windows VM i extend capacity of the (C:\) partition. the result will be 01 one vhdx with 01 one partition.?

I think about steps:

1- vm online

2- Move data from D:\ to shared space or other

3-Delete D:\ partition

4-I don't know if i do reboot or no

5- disk management > extend c:\ partition capacity with unallocated space

6- Reboot VM

is't right?

Thank you

I assume that you meant vmdk rather than vhdx.

Anyway, a possible way could be:

  1. add another virtual disk to the VM
  2. format the new drive, and assign a free drive letter (e.g. "X:")
  3. move data from 😧 to X:
  4. delete partition 😧
  5. resize partition C:
  6. change drive letter from X: to 😧
