Can't manage my ESX server 3.0.2

Hi,

We download the ESX Server 3.0.2 one month evaluation including a license tu test it before maybe buy it, but we're not able to do anything since we installed it. In fact, I installed it for the third time yesterday, hoping that I made a mistake in the previous installation. Oviously, i got the same result, Web service unavailable.

Before I make the decision to post a thread, I made so much search on google about my problems, most of the time i've been foward to this vmware forum. And to be honest, I'm a bit disappointed of the product i evaluate. At the first install, i follow exactly the procedure about install and configuration. Technically, when i saw this message on my server i was sure i could began manage it..

To manage this ESX server, use any browser to open the URL :

mean port 80

root@ESX-SERVER root# netstat -l --numeric-ports

Active Internet connections (only servers)

Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State

tcp 0 0 *:5988 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:5989 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:8005 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:902 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:8009 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:32810 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:8080 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:22 : LISTEN

udp 0 0 *:427 :

Is someone see something about port 80 ? nah !!!!! i can get a page from this link that is very different than what it should be, but I'm unable to log to web access (Web service unavailable.) that is up and running. Before that i needed to allow incomming and outgoing connection on the vmware firewall. What the other option to manage my server... using the virtual infrastructure client that is supposed to use port 902 that is listening. No more success, it says CONNECTION FAILED. Lets see which services are running... thats the default.

You are right the netstat output is very strange here is what I have from the service console....

Active Internet connections (only servers)

Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State

tcp 0 0 *:5988 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:5989 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:8005 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:vmware-authd : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:smux : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:8009 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:32811 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:http : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:webcache : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:8085 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:ssh : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:8087 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:9080 : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:https : LISTEN

tcp 0 0 *:1311 : LISTEN

udp 0 0 *:32768 :

udp 0 0 server.:32773 :

udp 0 0 *:snmp :

udp 0 0 *:svrloc :

udp 0 0 server:ntp :

udp 0 0 localhost.localdomain:ntp :

udp 0 0 *:ntp :

There is no port 8080 listening and the port 80 can be easily seen as http....

Are you sure this is version 3.0.2? What instructions did you follow for the install? It is a very cut and dry process and functionality shoudl be there just from besically accepting all defaults for the instalaltion.

Check out this guide it has license information at page 40 and is the defacto guide for installation.....

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_301_201_installation_guide.pdf

You may not beable to do anything without getting the correct ports open and listening.

Thanks to trying to help me.

In fact, i just followed the same procedure that there is inthe the pdf you posted for the installation. I put the licence(.lic) at the /etc/vmware/vmware.lic, reboot the server with the same result...

uanble to connect to web access neither to virtual client.

and yes im sure i got the 3.0.2

I noticed above that the vmware-hostd service is stopped. You need this service running to access the server through the VIclient. Run

service mgmt-vmware restart

be sure that the vmware-hostd service starts. Then give it a try.

Cause I didnt understand what was happening with my installation on

the old IBM server, i decide to try to installed it on a desktop pc, a

compaq evo. Obviously, the workstation dont have SCSI disk, but at

least, i wanted know if i will be able to manage the server.

THIS ANSWER WAS YES !!!!!!!!!! Everything was fonctionning correctly, except the storage with IDE and this is not a big deal.

Now i still needed to find whats wrong with this Netfinity5000. I'll keep you post on that.

And thanks BryanMcc for the post of your netstat output, itconfirmed me that http service was supposed to run by default.
