File copy error: "Function not implemented" when copying from local storage to SANs

I'm having a problem with copying an 8gB flat file from local storage to FC SANS.

VM 3.5.0,70356 (all current patches) - this is a clean install, not upgrade

DL380G5 32 gB RAM

Local storage: 146 gB mirrored formatted: VMFS 3.31

Remote storage: HP MSA1000

Connected with FCA2101 FC cards

Lun1: 546 gB RAID 5 formatted VMFS 3.21

Lun2: 273 gB RAID 5 formatted VMFS 3.21

Attempted restore made when at VMWare v3.0.2 using VISBU v0.9.1 - would not restore the 8gB vmdk file

Installed VISBU 1.0.1 and attempted restore - still nothing

Tried to copy the file manually using putty as follows:

Error:

# cp -i /vmfs/volumes/47c4d863-37f7a36f-2cdf-001cc46c7b78/SVV-CONVERTER/SVV-CONVERTER-flat.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/46e706a7-02c83aba-a14e-0017a43c804a/SVV-CONVERTER/

cp: writing `/vmfs/volumes/46e706a7-02c83aba-a14e-0017a43c804a/SVV-CONVERTER/SVV-CONVERTER-flat.vmdk': Function not implemented

It appears that the file begins to copy, leaving a 1,310,720 byte file at the destination before error occurs.

Copy from one local storage directory to another local storage directory does work fine, as do copied from FC SANs storage to local storage.

Copies and restores such as this did work fine in v3.0.2 on the same hardware

Linux is not a real familiar platform for me so I find it's been a lot of research: finding nothing yet. What am I missing
