I'd like to virtualize a Windows system that currently has a modem connected to it which only dials out once a day. The connection is short, a quick upload/download, then disconnect.
This is what I am planning on doing:
2 ESX hosts, each with their own serial modem
Configure DRS for this VM only to Manual
Configure HA for this VM to any of the "autostart" settings and choose a priority
Use the Advanced Setting “das.defaultfailoverhost” to specify the host which HA will try to restart the VM
I would like to avoid the use of a network serial server
and eliminate any additional hardware/software/potential point of
failure. I have read the threads about third party solutions that
convert RS-232 to Ethernet, but I want to know if anyone has connected
a serial modem directly to an ESX host and successfully had a guest use
it.
Your tips, tricks and advice are greatly appreciated!
