Resizing Arrays and LUNs

When we setup our SAN, many moons ago, we decided to create standard arrays of 600GB's and then sub-divided each array into 6x100GB LUN's which were formated as VMFS.

For various reasons I need to rethink this design and would like to delete/remove our 6x100GB LUN's and create a 600GB LUN.

From an ESX perspective, do I need to do anything other the remove the LUN's from within the Virtual Center?

I am under the assumption that simply removing the LUN's (Virtual Center => Configuration => Storage => Remove), creating the new LUN's from within the SAN software, and then rescanning the SAN (Virtual Center => Configuration => Storage Adapters => Rescan), is all that needs to be done in order to pull this off.

Are there any further steps that I need to be concerned about? Data loss is not an issue as I will migrate the VM's prior to removing the LUN's.

Hi Jason,

this is the correct way to do it.

However, doing similar storage migrations we found it helpful NOT to

re-scan HBAs from the VI client. This timed out often, messed up

the GUI display, and we did not really know, if the re-scan was successful.

Do the re-scan on the service consoles of the ESX hosts instead with

esxcfg-rescan

If you will be creating VM's over 256GB you might want to increase your block size from 1MB to 2MB to support larger VM disk files.
