issues with network connectivity

Hi all,

I have some issues with connecting my new esx server to the network.

I have followed the 'default' esx configuration from the CD and installed esx on my new dell2950.

It detected both ethernet cards, and I assigned a static IP.

From the machine console, I can ping the address.

I can ping the address from another computer in the network (although I can't resolve its host name).

I can nmap it, and the results are as follows:

Starting Nmap 4.20 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2008-01-21 15:16 EST

Interesting ports on 172.28.91.202\:

Not shown: 1691 closed ports

PORT State Service

22/tcp open ssh

80/tcp open http

427/tcp open svrloc

443/tcp open https

902/tcp open iss-realsecure-sensor

903/tcp open iss-console-mgr

MAC Address: 00:50:56:42:DB:DD (VMWare)

The problem is:

1: I can't ping out of that machine. Whether it be another machine (on the network or out of it)

2: I can't connect to the esx server via any of the ports above (well, ssh, http and https, anyway).

Is there anything that needs to be done for me to be able to connect to the machine directly?

Anything else I can test or any other information that might be useful to anyone here to help me with this issue?

Thanks,

Ivan.

Have you assigned a default gateway to the ESX Server?

Yes, I have .. When I went through the install..

How do I make changes to the ethernet devices?

eth0 or eth1 don't seem to be the right ones, and ifconfig doesn't seem to be helping much either..

Actually what is really odd.. IS that when I try to ssh into the machine, it logs me in, prompts me for a password, but then says the 'permission is denied'.

==============================EDIT=============================

Okay, I managed to connect to the server via ssh and its IP address.

So, some progress is being made.

I still can't connect via http (although the ports are open). I disabled the firewall and still no luck.

SSH is disabled for root by default, did you open it up? if not check /etc/sshd/sshd_config and restart the service

By the way, the command to configure the service console or any other vswitch etc:

esxcfg-nics -l = list all nics

esxcfg-vswitch -l = list all virtual switches

esxcfg-vswif -l = list the vswifs etc...

and there are more options with these commands, look into them.

Hi there,

Yes, I finally realised how to enable root access via ssh.

I am beginning to think that perhaps a similar file needs to be edited that will allow me to access the server via a web interface.

Port 80 is open, however I get an error of: 'the page cannot be displayed', whether I use default port, or port 8080 to connect.

Any ideas?

Service httpd is not found .. Do I need to do further installations (ie, apache) to esx? does this not come installed by default?

I am under the impression that the MUI has not been installed.

And as I said, the service httpd does not exist.

How do I go about installing the MUI? Keep in mind that for some reason I don't have access to the outside.

In regards to that, is there anything I need to change in the esx server to allow me access to either ping other computers inside or outside the network?
