Are you able to use the CLI client on ESXi and mount a usb HD connected to the host machine?

I do not believe so since ultimately it is the vmkernel that controls the hardware and since the vmkenerl does not uspport USB attached storage you will not be able to do what you suggest

Thanks Weinstein5 I guess for now I will do what Imonaco suggested with USB anywhere. Thanks again for your help

It's not supported. VMware recommends AnywhereUSB.
