As of I understand, we dont need DRS for doing the vMotion. We just need Vmotion license and a SAN/NAS setup to perform the vMotion.
And DRS is needed for effective load balancing only.

Correct, DRS uses vMotion for balancing. But vMotion is its own thing, like you said, need a license, shared storage, compatible CPUs.
