I'm just getting started again with VMWare for the first time in a number of years. I just installed 3.5 ESXi on a 32bit machine that has a regular version of Server 2008 already installed on it. I ran the installation CD and the VMWare appeared to load but when it rebooted it went straight to the installed server. Do I need to install VMWare on an empty hard drive or is there a work around to turn the installed server into a VM machine?
Thanks,
Brian
Since we already know that VMware ESX is Bare metal operating system. If I have understood correct then at the moment you have the dual operating system installed on your machine. Instead of this you can install the Vmware workstation and create a new VM and install Vmware ESXi into this VM.This is quite easy configuration and good to learn.
You can find a good installation document on www.xtravirt.com website.

To install ESX/ESXi you have to boot with the DVD.
No host OS is required and note that you will lose your previous installation of other OSes.

I will work on this again this afternoon thanks for the help. I'll post something once I've gotten it working.
Thanks again,
Brian
I found a blank drive to work from and I have it working now. Thanks for the help. Brian
