Hi All,
For learning purpose i am trying to install ESX3.5 on my 'vmware workstation 5.0' on my laptop. Installation stops @ "unable to find any supproted network devices". I suspect this (Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL) is not supported, can anyone confirm this ?
In the compatibility list , i can see support for : Intel(R) PRO/1000 PT ...? , does that mean PL is not supported ?
Thanks,
Ashwin
Are you saying you are not able to edit the *.vmx file? You should not have the VM running, then edit the vmx file. You should REPLACE the line stating the ethernet0 type (from whatever is there initialy to "e1000". Then save the vmx file and exit the texteditor.
The start the VM with the ESX CD mounted.
Can you tell at which point you get an error (and what the exact error is).
Hi,
As far as I know - You cannot run ESX 3.5 under VMware Workstation. You could try to run ESX 3.0 under workstation 6. There are howto's on that topic. If you decide to follow that road, just make sure your laptop has a VT-enabled CPU onboard. If it hasn't, don't even bother - booting ESX 3.0 will take more than an hour then... (and after that things get REALLY slow )
Thanks Eirc for replying to this thread.
I have another laptop running vmware workstation 6.0, and i tried running ESX 3.0 on that as well, but it stops @ "unable to find any supported network devices", i am frustated with this screen mesage. This is VAIO laptop with Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL netowk adaptor.
Does this indicates- i need a separate network adapter ?
Thanks much!
Hi,
No success yet
I am actually doing the steps mentioned in this article.
http://www.virtualization.info/2007/06/tech-how-to-run-esx-server-3-on-vmware.html
I am facing 'vlance' issue, i tried performing the tips mentioned in the comments section but no go. After closing the vmware, i edited the vmx file but when i tried to load the vmx it says - Unable to open configuration file (Null). it keeps reseting the networkcard to "vlance
Any more suggestions ..?
Thanks much!!

Hi Eric,
I took a long break came back this morning, and did the same steps as i did yesterday and it WORKED . This time it did not reset 'vlance'.
You deserve full appreciation. Thanks!
Another problem - After the successful installation, when it rebooted it got hang at "VMkernal loaded successfully", and its not moving at all. Is any further fiddeling required ?
Thanks,
Ashwin
