Cannot make changes to a (shutdown) VM's properties

I'm using a vm I copied over from VMware 5.5 Workstation for Windows. The VM is of Win 2003 server and I have shut it down so that I can change its RAM, CD, hdd etc. properties. The properties are greyed out and unavailable for change however. What may be preventing the change of properties?

The permissions of the vm's files are -rwxr-xr-x

I have been able to install the vmtools inside the guest OS, and I can shutdown, but cannot take a VM snapshot as that's greyed out also. I havent tried creating a new vm from scratch, the behaviour is just for vm's created elsewhere.

Try upgrading the Virtual Hardware under Virtual Machine -> Upgrade Virtual Machine

Also, are you sure that the VM has been powered off, and not just suspended?

Great - thank you. The 'Upgrade Virtual Machine' menu option was necessary. After running that the properties are no longer greyed out.
