How can I get a Meerkat Ubuntu guest to recognize my 1920x1200 display?

I have just upgraded to Fusion 3.1.2 on my Mac Mini and reinstalled VMware tools on a Meerkat guest. An old problem persists: although I have a 1920x1200 display that was recognized under Lucid, my display is stuck at 1280x720 and no higher resolution is recognized.

How can I get my guest to display at 1920x1200?

After fiddling with the guest, I made a fresh install and the fresh install worked.
