Host: Windows XP Professional: up-to-date with the latest bugs.
Guest: Ubuntu 710; up to date
VM software: VM Player 2.02 (the latest)
"Out of the blue", starting today, Ubuntu fails to load. Upon getting the Starting up page, I get:
http:// 0.092000 ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
http:// 0.092000 Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC - timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option
Is these options that I can specify in VMPlayer? If so, where, please? Do we know what causes this problem? Is it file corruption of the VM?
Thank you.
This is so frustrating! In my question above, the error message changed to show http addresses. I DID NOT type in http, and it is absolutely incorrect for the discussion forum software to have inserted http!
Also, just trying to type in messages and tags is very slow! It did not used to be this sluggish!
How do we prevent the automatic insertion of http, please, and to whom can we forward this bug?
Thank you.
This is an Ubuntu related problem, and has really nothing to do with VMware at all.
Wikipedia has an entry on the Intel Apic Architecture: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_APIC_Architecture), and it discusses your problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_APIC_Architecture#Operating_System_Issues
You have to add the noapic (and possibly nolapic) option(s) to grub, as described here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/how-to-add-noapic-to-grub-599143/
Here's how to fix the problem permanently:
