Hi,
There's a number of reports on latest VMware Tools having this type of issue for some users. Apparently it is not clear yet on the what/why.
So far I've heard of two ways to resolve.
- install an earlier VMware Tools or roll back to the previous version of VMware workstation/Player entirely.

- instead of updating VMware Tools on the guest performa a clean install. Eg: uninstall - reboot guest - install VMware Tools - reboot guest.
