I have been trying to get a stable clone of a Windows 7 x64 guest (Windows 10 x64 host) with Workstation 12.1 on an external USB 3 HDD. This started when I discovered the clone had system file errors so I ended up re-cloning the previous VM. These are full clones. What seems to be happening is that the Windows 7 system files are getting corrupted during the cloning.
What I did was to check the original VM using "sfc", the OS is in good shape. I then do a full clone, run it and run "sfc" right away. SFC reports there are problems it cannot fix. Is there some reason this does not work with Workstation 12.1? Or is there some setting that needs attention?
