The feature list for Workstation 11 says, "Workstation 11 has been optimized to support higher resolution displays like the new QHD+ (3200x1800) displays used in laptops and x86 tablets." This was a big selling point for me, as I have a Yoga 2 Pro (3200x1800). When I boot up my Ubuntu VM, though, the display still appears tiny, and most things are too small to read. I expected to be able to scale this up so I can work with it properly on my ultrafine pixel screen, but I don't see any way to do that. This all sees the same as Workstation 10. There is the ability to go fullscreen and scale, but I am accustomed to working with multiple VMs at a time in separate windows. What am I missing?
This doesn't solve the original problem (or my problem) because it won't help on OSes without vmtools or on any system prior to tools startup (during boot). In VirtualBox I can just drag the window larger and it scales perfectly...
I'm also on a Yoga 2 Pro (3200x1800) using WS12, but on a Linux host (Arch 64 bit).
I find this frustrating as well.
I don't need all the fancy typography from high-dpi displays, necessarily (although that would be nice, too.)
But, a feature/checkbox to say "scale each virtual display pixel to two physical pixels" would be a fantastic feature.
I'm using Workstation 12.5, hosting on Windows 10 AE, guests VMs are everything from very old Linux/X11 systems to Windows 7 Pro.
(Also, "stretch guest" is dimmed for me, I cannot select it!)
#10 worked for me.
Following worked for me. I'm using Ubuntu as guest OS.
I logged in to guest OS(ubuntu). Then go to setting and then select display. There you will see something related to scaling, It should be set as "1". I changed to 2 and it worked fine for me even after reboot.
I'm also running Ubuntu (16.04), and there is no scaling option in Ubuntu's settings app.
I have a Dell XPS15 running Windows 10 Pro as the host OS, VMWare Workstation Player 12.5.5. Guest OS is Kubuntu 14.04.
Host resolution is 3840 x 2160 and scaled to 250%.
On my guest OS, I have VMware tools installed, but in Full screen mode or not, the display on the guest OS is VERY small.
None of the solution above worked me.
Any suggestion would be most welcome.
Solution 10 worked for me in workstation 12 on surfacebook windows 10
these are what the settings look like.
Make sure to switch the drop down to "System"
Overall, "override High-DPI scaling provided by system" seems to be an improvement, but I think there is a bug in VMware Tools is breaking mouse dragging Window...
It seems the VMware tools is reporting one mouse position and the rest of the guest OS is simultaneously reporting a different mouse position... Craziness ensues...
Using Win+Left/Right/Up/Down to move around windows you can work around most of it...
Remove VMware Tools and then you loose display resizing, folder sharing, etc... Not so good...
Host: Windows 10, Fall Creators Update
VM: Windows 10, latest insiders release
This solved the issue for me.
Go to View -> Autosize and select Autofit Guest
Your pointer is to a restricted area and therefore not very helpful.
I have the same issue with VMWare player 15, using an unsupported OS - OS/2 / eComstation, which means no VM tools.
I am using a 32" 4K monitor. Host OS is Ubuntu 18.04 .
OS/2 has tons of configuraiton that needs to be done in text mode. The window is approximately 4x3 inches on my screen. Even with 20 / 20 vision, I have to put my eyes about 3 inches from the screen in order to read the text ! The only thing that helps is the system-wide screen magnifier in Ubuntu, but I find that quite inconvenient.
Is there any way to scale the text during the boot process, including the VM's BIOS text before any OS is loaded ?
