Mounting VMDK files on Windows 7 x64 - still no solution?

It's been a while now since it has last been adressed, and never was the question really answered, as far as I could tell using the search function and Google.

The question is simple enough:

How can I mount VMDK files and map them to a drive letter on Windows 7 x64?

It seems vmware-mount.exe itself is still (!) incompatible with Windows 7 x64. Are there any easy solutions to make it work, or any good alternatives to it?

Thanks!

Does it have to be command line?   You can use the Workstation GUI.  File menu, Map or Disconnect Virtual Disks.  Seems to be working on my Win7pro-64 bit machine.  (Or am I missing something?)

mounting vmdks on Win7-64 is hit or miss
sometimes the map function of Workstation works - sometimes vmware-mount from the VDDK works

sometimes it only works with write-access  - sometimes with readonly only ...

I do not see a pattern yet
