VM Workstation 6.5.2 (RHEL 4 host) wont start guest OS unless you remove the virtual USB controller

I am having issues with VMware

Workstation 6.5.2 and VMware Player 2.5.2 - When trying to boot a vm

with a virtual USB controller, the image will not boot, it only hangs

on a blank screen. No error message either, then you have to force

kill vmware and remove the lock files from the guest OS in order to

try again. This applies to images built on VM Workstation 6.0 when

using version 6.5.2, and new images built with VM Workstation 6.5.2.

If I change the options of the usb controller to not allow High speed

support, not to automatically connect at power on, and not to show

all input devices the guest OS still does not boot. The only way I

am able to boot the guest is if I remove the USB controller all

together.

My host OS is RHEL 4 Workstation running on

2.6.9-78.0.17.ELsmp kernel. My guest OS is Windows XP Pro SP3. I

have two USB devices, a dvd burner and a scanner.

These devices and guest images worked

without issue using vmware player 1.0.3 - 2.0.2 and vmware

workstation 5.5.2 - 6.0.0-4

There were no issues or error messages

during the install of VMware Workstation 6.5.2. Nothing in

/var/log/messages to indicate USB device conflict.
