Virtual Win 2003 Server and XP Client : Getting them to see each other

I am trying to setup a virtual network with a Windows 2003 Server with AD, DNS, DHCP, File Share etc and an XP Pro Client that connects to it.

The host PC is running XP Home with 3GB RAM and is getting it's IP (currently 192.168.0.6) from DHCP router address 192.168.0.1

I have setup the virtual machines and both work fine by themselves. I now come to getting them to see each other. I have configured the 2003 Server to have 2 NIC's - one is Bridged - set as a NAT External facing router connection, the other NIC is set to Custom VMNet2. The XP NIC is set to Custom VMNet2.

My problem comes when trying to connect the XP workstation to the domain. I can ping the Server by IP. When I try putting in the domain name "testing.local" in system properties I get the error : "The Format of the specified name is invalid", if I just enter the NetBios name of "training" I get the domain controller could not be contacted.

I can ping by IP server to client and client to server but not my name, which makes me suspect a DNS issue.

I've read a lot of posts on the forum and tried a lot of variations of dns settings/subnets but I'm stabbing in the dark at the moment and it's driving me mad!

I've been looking for a good detailed for setting up what I would've thought would be quite a common setup for learning but haven't found much. Can someone suggest what I'm doing wrong/correct DNS settings

thanks in advance

DNS of your server is training.local while DNS of your workstation is testing.local. Probably a misconfiguration in your DHCP scope.
