.vmdk file not found

I'm running VMWare Workstation 5.5.2, on Windows XP Pro. I have 4 VMs, and yesterday, I cloned one (full, independent clone) to create a 5th VM. Today, another VMthat I did nothing with yesterday, neither with VMWare nor manuallywill not start up. The error I receive is"

File not found: NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk

In this VM's directory, I do still have NR-DEV-01-C-000001.vmdk, about 18GB in size (so I believe this is the actual VM). I see in other VM directories, small 1KB .vmdk files that appear to be configuration files. However, in the corrupted VM, there is no such file.

This is my first problem with VMWare, and my first post to this forum. I searched for similar issues in the forum, but found none.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The VM I cloned is named NR-DEV-02; the clone's name is NR-DEV-05. The corrupt VM is NR-DEV-01. Here is what I believe to be the relevant portions of the last two logfiles:

Am I asking this wrong? Have I (unintentionally) offended anyone? Am I just screwed? Has no one any advice, suggestions, comments ... anything?

What did you do with THIS virtual disk (NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk)? You cannot have a snapshot disk without its parent disk. Post a directory listing of the VM's folder - names and sizes.

Is the VM that no longer works a clone of one of the other VMs ?

I did not do anything with NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk. Until this error popped up, I never even entered the directory. That's my point. One day it worked, the next day, thisapparently criticalfile was gone.

Here is the directory listing:

Continuum ... No, it is not. It is the other way around, in fact. NR-DEV-02 (the one I cloned to created NR-DEV-05) is itself a clone of NR-DEV-01.

Did you move any files from one of the VMs manually ?

Continuum: No, I did not. I did not do anything manually, with any of my VMs. Until this error popped up, I never even looked in the VM directories; I had no reason to.

SO you say the master of the clone does no longer work ?

Be very careful - I believe you run into a very nasty variant of the absolutepathname bug - you can not handle VMs as if they were independant now.

Hmm - I am to tired to look into it now - if the problem still exists tomorrow I'll be back.

I guess we need file-listings of all VMs that are using the same master.

Thanks you for feedback so far. Here is a listing of all of my VMWare directories. They were all created in the order they are numbered. 2 & 3 were cloned from 1, 5 was cloned from 2. I'm no longer certain about 4, but I believe it was also cloned from 1.

I have not accessed NR-DEV-03 or NR-DEV-04 in awhile, so I just tested them now. DEV-04 works; however, DEV-03 gives this warning:

"The location of this virtual machine's configuration file has changed since it was last powered on."

It then asks if I want to create a new UUID, or locate the old one. I chose neither, since I never moved this file, either, and I do not want to further break anything.

    Download the following zip http://sanbarrow.com/diskreport/tools.zip

extract it and copy ddtget.exe in the G:\VMWare Data\NR-DEV-01 folder.

After that execute the following command

    ddtget --vmdk=NR-DEV-01-C-000001.vmdk --desc=NR-DEV-01-C-000001.txt

and post the newly created text file.

If you get errors instead post the error.

Also post the other short VMDK files (from the other folders):

along with their name and the directory they are from.

According to the descriptors your VMs are not linked - this is good.

And the file NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk definitely is missing - which is bad.

Can you try an undelete tool on this disk and check if you can (at least partly) recover the missing file.

One free available tool is NTFS Undelete (www.ntfsundelete.com).

If this fails we can create a faked base disk and try to recover some data using vdk (but this is Ullis part Smiley Wink )

Thanks, oreeh. I didn't even think of undelete. However, I have now tried this, using EasyRecovery Professional, and there is no sign that this file ever existed. At least, EasyRecovery can find nothing by that name anywhere on my hard drive to even try to recover.

I have already looked at the other base disk files (if that's what they're called?), and they look like very simple configuration files. Except for the CID value, I could rebuild one manually for my corrupted VM ... and the ddtget utility you gave me provided that value.

Is there any reason I cannot simply build this missing file myself, manually?

The base disk is a VMDK containing the file system.

The short VMDK files are descriptor files.

The missing disk should have a size of about 20 GB.

I'm not sure what type of disk you used.

If it was a monolithicSparse disk the filename should be NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk (monolithicSparse disks don't have external descriptor files).

If it was another disk type NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk is a missing descriptor (which can be rebuilt) but then

you are missing files like NR-DEV-01-C-flat.vmdk or NR-DEV-01-C-f*.vmdk.

Try if you can find such files - or even better any deleted file with the extension .vmdk.

Before recovering files post a list of the found vmdk files.

In my NR-DEV-01 directory (the corrupted VM), there is NR-DEV-01-C-000001.vmdk. This is 18GB in size. The missing file (NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk) was apparently the small 1KB descriptor file. This is the file that I'm asking about rebuilding.

The ddtget utility you gave me generated a text file (posted above) that indicates my NR-DEV-01 VM is monolithicSparse. If that's the case, then does that mean this NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk descriptor file never existed?

That actually seems more likely to me, that VMWare has become confused, and now thinks it requires a non-existent descriptor file to open this VM.

Note that I have tried changing the name of NR-DEV-01-C-000001.vmdk (the 18GB base disk file) to NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk. This generates an identical error message, except then the "file not found" is NR-DEV-01-C-000001.vmdk.

I searched for the -C-flat.vmdk files you mentioned. There are no such files anywhere on my system, only the -C-cl1-flat.vmdk and -C-cl2-flat.vmdk files associated with some of the other VMs. EasyRecovery Professional (my undelete utility) did not find \*any* deleted .vmdk files at all.

The file "NR-DEV-01-C-000001.vmdk" indicates a snapshot file.

The descriptor you extracted proves this

parentCID=ae633949 <--- this is the CID of the missing parent

parentFileNameHint="G:\VMWare Data\NR-DEV-01\NR-DEV-01-C.vmdk" <--- this is the filename of the parent disk[/b]

If you simply rename the snapshot file this doesn't help, since WS recognizes (from the CIDs and the fileNameHint) that there's a parent disk missing.

Since there is no evidence of the missing file we have to try something else.

You posted earlier that you created VMs 2 and 3 from number 1.

Do you have an idea when[/b] you did this?

VMs 2 and 3 (and 4 for that matter) were all created quite awhile ago, close to a year ago.

How could my parent disk just vanish without a trace? Even if it got deleted, the undelete utility would at least show some record of it, even if it couldn't restore it.

I obviously do not know much about the specific workings of VMWare and how it handles the different VMs (although I'm learning Smiley Happy ). However, since this appears to have happened as a result of cloning a different VM (NR-DEV-02 into NR-DEV-05), I'm inclined to think that either I did something wrong when I cloned it, or VMWare experienced an error during the operation, that has caused this problem.
