Virtual Distributed Switches (vDS) are supported and recommended by VMware. vDS provides full automation.
Although it is supported, VMware recommends that you do not use vSwitches because:
- All port groups have to be created accordingly on all ESX hosts in advance
- Dynamic provisioning via on-the-fly network pools is not possible
The Cisco Nexus v1000 only works with pre-provisioned network pools and does not work with:
- VLAN-backed network pools
- vCNI backed network pools
