Live Migration of VM's stuck on "validating"

Hi,

I have a strange one, when selecting more than 2 VM's from a host and trying to perform a live migration of VM's i am unable to move past the "validating" spinning circle, the problem seems to be mainly when migrating between DC's. This function has always worked previously so i'm not sure why the issue has suddenly arrose. The Hosts in question are all in the same EVC mode and have been in place for a few years with no changes really being made to them apart from the usual ESXi updates. If i select 2 VM's then the response is instant. Any more than 2 and i hit the spinning circle which just seems to spin endlessly without failing or moving forward.

Anybody have any suggestions on where to start looking?

Cheers

Hi,

Is this your situation?

VM_Yamato_0-1658304897895.png

And could I confirm these things?

1. Is the vMotion for single or dual VMs between DCs working correctly?

2. Did you reboot your vCenter Server?

3. Did you restart hostd/vpxa in each ESXi hosts?

4. Did you reboot your ESXi hosts?

This is my guess but something that is related vMotion may not working correctly. And you said no change for your environment.

To recover related internal component, reboot ESXi hosts and vCenter Server may be solution. (When reboot ESXi hosts, memory leak will be fixed and it may be root cause for this scenario.)

This situation is first time for me but I hope my sugesstion will support your case. If you already have done these, please let me know.

Finally, these two KB may support you.

Hi Yes, this is my situation

And could I confirm these things?

1. Is the vMotion for single or dual VMs between DCs working correctly?

Single and dual vm vMotion is working correctly - any more than this and it sticks on "validating"

2. Did you reboot your vCenter Server?

vCenter has been updated and performed reboot as part of this process previously and still not working

3. Did you restart hostd/vpxa in each ESXi hosts?

Hosts have been rebooted, services restarted

4. Did you reboot your ESXi hosts?

Yes hosts have been rebooted (cold reboot)

Very Strange indeed.

Thanks share your detail.

When you try multile VM vMotion from CLI, you may be able to get more detail.

To do that, you need to prepare PowerCLI at your management station.

https://developer.vmware.com/docs/powercli/latest/vmware.vimautomation.core/commands/move-vm/#Defaul...

and this blog explains multiple VM vMotion.

https://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0001585

From GUI migrate, only running circle icon show us but CLI may show more detail.
