Perhaps a bit more info would help.

vSphere version?

Ever done it before?

VM have snapshots?

Guest OS?

Datastore type?

Not sure which procedure you tried - if necessary you can always expand flat.vmdks with dd.
Does not make sense if you have snapshots but it WORKS ALL THE TIME.
