Unable to power on VM, Failed - File system specific implementation of OpenFile[file] failed

Hi all,

We had a power outage at the datacenter and my 1 VM does not want to power on. Appears to be an issue on the 1 disk. Error when starting vm:

Failed - File system specific implementation of OpenFile[file] failed

  • File system specific implementation of OpenFile[file] failed
  • 22 (Invalid argument)
  • Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/609b871c-256422fc-23ae-8cdcd4176f38/svrhetzvbr01.system5.local/svrhetzvbr01.system5.local.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
  • Module 'Disk' power on failed.
  • Failed to start the virtual machine.

With the above I checked with VMKfstools -c and get error disk chain is inconsistent and also ran a     hexdump which gave the below output on the vmdk file as well as the flat file

hexdump: /vmfs/volumes/VM02_Ext_36TB_SATA_2/svrhetzvbr01.system5.local/svrhetzvbr01.system5.local-flat.vmdk: Invalid argument
hexdump: /vmfs/volumes/VM02_Ext_36TB_SATA_2/svrhetzvbr01.system5.local/svrhetzvbr01.system5.local-flat.vmdk: Bad file descriptor

Anyone have any suggestions on  resolving the error and getting the disk to mount?

Thanks

Hi,

Read this KB: Powering on a virtual machine fails with the error: Cannot open the disk (1038189) (vmware.com)

I guess, problem will be solved by 2nd solution. (error 2)
