I'm copying a large file from one Win2003VM to another on the same host and vswitch and it's taking forever.
For example, a 1.5Gb file from one 2003 VM to another - same host and vswitch, anything up to 6 minutes.
Run the same between two 2008 VMs, same vswitch or different vswitch - less than a minute.
I've tested this on various VMs and physical servers.
The duration to copy the file is the same on physical servers with 100Mb speed as it is on the 2003 VMs even though they're supposed to be gigabit.
Any ideas as to how I can speed this up? All hosts and virtual and physical switches are set to auto detect and are picking up a gigabit link.
Thanks.
Hello Molly, do you have the vmware tools installed correctly?, check that you have the hw version of the vm in version 7, and the vnics are vmxnet 3.
You can configure the nics in auto to and do the tests again.

Hi, VMWare tools are installed correctly on all VMs (I've tested this on abuot 20 different machines).
Some machines are version 7 and some are version 4 with the letest VMWare tools. Regardless of the version 2003 remains significantly slower than 2003.
I don't see vmxnet3 anywhere. The NIC types are a mixture of Flexible or E1000 adaptor types.
I had the same issues a few months back. Here is the KB and fix that did wonders for me.
interesting. the kb stated that it is not applicable for ESX environment. Nonetheless it's worth a try too.
I've never actually caught that part but yes it worked great on my ESXi 4.0 box.
