Guys,
I tried renaming a VM based on some instructions that I found on one of the posts but it failed.
Does anybody know the exact steps and which files need to be edited to rename a VM

Hi,
The best way would be to create identical VM and use the existing old VM's harddisk.

Hi,
To rename a VM, there are 2 steps : delete from inventory your vm and rename on the ESX.
You have to power off the VM.
Delete from inventory the concerned VM. You have to do this because link between VC and the file will be lost.
To rename on the ESX, you have to know where all files a stored. Connect you on the ESX server with ssh. Rename the files with the correct name, and, to be clean, rename the directory too.
Edit vmx and vmdk files with vi to change name and path to vm's files.
Once done, on VC, browse your LUN to find your vmx file and add it to inventory.
It's the only way I found to rename correctly a VM. It is not complicated
