Is it possible to use a client-side CD/DVD burner to burn a disk from a guest OS?

I would like to test some burning SW, and don't want to do it on a physical machine.

Is there a document somewhere that tells how?

I made a brief unsuccessful attempt yesterday, and don't want to waste a lot of time if it is never going to work.

Client is up-to-date.
