VCP Exams

I am planning to take the VCP Exams. Can someone please answer below questions.

(1) Is it necessary to take up the course before appearing exams

(2) What books do you recommend from exam point of view?

Thanks,

Sumeet.

You must attend a class and pass the exam to become a VCP.

The class provides a very good manual and the rest you can fill in with the product documentation and hands on experience.

The above has some practice questions that I found from another poster in these forums.

The class I found very good, coming from basically no VI experience, (only ever used server and workstation products) I found it very informative.

I am not sure of any books equivilant to the Cisco Press or MS books. I don't think they are necessary but I will find out when I sit the exam in a couple of days.

I've looked all over for an updated book (VI3) but I couldn't find anything at all. Most of the stuff is on 2.5. If you go to Amazon.com a decent one that people have referred me to is called:

VMware ESX Server

Advanced Technical Design Guide

ISBN-10: 0971151067

You can download the .pdf of the ATDG from www.vi3book.com - and get info on what's happening with the update for ESX3

Unfortunately, this book covers ESX 2.x.

The new exam stresses the new functionality VERY heavily, so I'd study up on DRS, HA, VCB, resource pools, clusters, etc... and that isn't in the current ATDG book! Sorry Smiley Sad

STRONGLY suggest studying the Quick Start, Installation and Upgrade, Basic Admin, and Resource Management Guides. All can be downloaded from VMWare. Just make sure you have a duplex printer or you'll burn through several reams of paper pretty quickly.

You might save yourself all of that time and paper and have LuLu.com print the pdf's out for you. I had them print out a 350 page pdf for me...and they printed and shipped it to me for $14. It was a nice 9x6 perfect bound style, black & white with a color cover. Not bad...and it was shipped to me in about a week.

Or you can just buy the kit that includes VI3 media and docs. It's $150. Plus shipping.
