Seasons' Greetings to all.
Kind of a newbie here. This is for my lab environment.
I have always used the vCenter Server Simple Install option which also installs the bundled Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Express edition.
Now, I am doing an eval of vSphere 5.1 and I want to manually setup a database server using Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.
I know how to do the Database Server install and get it up and running. But, I am not sure how exactly to setup a database for vCenter Server.
I looked at the vSphere Installation and Setup guide and I dont seem to be able to follow the Preparing vCenter Server Databases section, because I am not a Database person. Is there any other guide or a blog I can follow? I have searched alot, and could not find anything i was looking for. Thought I'd ask here.
Here here are the VMs I have.
lab-DC1 (Domain Controller)
lab-DC2 (Domain Controller)
lab-SQL1 (SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise)
lab-SQL2 (SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise - to later setup failover clustering)
lab-VC1(vCenter Server 1)
Any help appreciated!
Happy holidays. Here's a link to another site with a nice guide for installing SQL 2008 for VMware. The 4.x version published at lonesysadmin.net was quite helpful so I'm sure the updated 5.x (have not read through it yet) should be equally packed with helpful tips.

this should work:

Thanks bud! yes I followed that and I got vCenter installed on my test vms! I just got it up and running as I type this!
I had to make some tweaks here and there to the instructions. I gotta do a write-up with screenshots.
Thanks!
Happy holidays to you too!

thank you very much for your help. I have read http://vknowledge.net/2012/08/22/how-to-setup-ms-sql-2008-r2-for-vmware-vcenter/ before but I was looking for how to setup the actual database for vCenter and SSO. (Users/Permissions/ODBC Connection/etc)
I found the instructions here: http://lonesysadmin.net/2011/10/06/how-to-install-microsoft-sql-server-2008-r2-for-vmware-vcenter-5/
I had to do some tweaks here and there for it to work.
I have the 5.1 installed on my test vms
Before Setup SSO, U need to install the Windows SQL Server 2008
Read here: SSO. (Users/Permissions) : http://communities.vmware.com/message/2160014#2160014
Once the SSO is setup...
The other is same as same as the vCenter 5.0
