How to convert a MSDE based VC from physical to virtual?

Hello everybody!

I'm currently trying to use VMware Converter to move my VC from a physical to a virtual machine. On a first attempt everything went fine as far as I could see but VC service refuses to start on the virtual machine. In the freshest log file under C:\WINDOWS\Temp\vpx the last entries read:

ODBC error: (08001) - [ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server existiert nicht oder Zugriff verweigert.

No pool found with id 1

Failed to intialize VMware VirtualCenter. Shutting down...

On the physical VC machine I installed VC with the MSDE database option. So why does the virtualized service search for an SQL server? Is it possible to convert a MSDE based VC at all or do I need a 'real' database for this?

Thanks in advance...

Christian

BTW: when using converter, in step 2 (destination) it offers me '#ha-host' as the VM's destination. What does that mean exactly? Why isn't the ESX server's hostname displayed here?

You can reinstall VC and create a new instance of MSDE and than register again all your host.

Or (better) install a real SQL Server like MS SQL or Oracle and let it do the work.

For the second question ... do you have a fully worked DNS Server somewhere ?

I know that I can do a fresh install of VC on a VM, my question was if I must do it that way Smiley Wink

As to the DNS topic: we have a DNS service here but all of 'my' VMware stuff is in evaluation/testing mode still so we didn't care to register it with our DNS yet. I just thought converter would fetch the hostname from the ESX server along with the inventory...
