Invalid characters while trying to assign permissions in VC (squares)

Ive got a problem where all accounts in AD show up as square's which are classed i presume as Invalid characters while trying to assign permissions in VC as i get an error saying the account doesnt exist.

Domain\??n (here the squares didnt show up but instead question marks)

Anyone seen this before ?

I don't know if this will fix it or not, but within vCenter on the main Administration toolbar, go to VirtualCenter Management Server Configuration. Highlight Active Directory and change you timeout to maybe 120 seconds and increase the Maximum number of users & groups......
