Migrate from 4.0 to 4.1 with a existing (external)...

Hey Everybody,

we have a environment with 4 ESX 4.0 Hosts and a VCenter Server with a Installed Microsoft SQL 2008 Database. The VCenter Server is 32Bit the Database of course, too. Now we need to update the total environment to 4.1, but we like to use the old VCenter Server as Database-Server for the new 64Bit VCenter Server. Is this possible?

If Yes, how ?

if not, is it easiely possible to migrate the 2008 Database to the new Server with a new Hostname?

Hi,

vCenter Server 4.1 is compatible with SQL Server 2008 32 Bits, so you won't have any problem in order to use the old server as Database server for vCenter Server 4.1.

Always remember to make a backup of vCenter Database to make a restore of vCenter if the upgrade process fails.

so i just need to set up the ODBC drivers on the new system and select the old Database while the installation process? Is that right ?

Right!

In the new server with 64-bits OS, you have to create a DSN ODBC pointing to database server (the current server). Then, when you are running the vCenter installation process, you have to use that DSN (this action upgrades the vCenter database schema).

Take a look of vCenter Upgrade Guide in VMware Documentation, specially the Chapter 5 "Upgrade to vCenter Server on a Different Machine and Upgrade the Existing Database"
