Performance vm on iscsi

Hello

I have 3 Hosts that connected to an iscsi IBM Ds3300 single controller with 512ram 8x300disk one raid5 and 4 Lun

All host are exsi4 with mio and jumbo frame enable

I am wondering how many vm can I put on the iscsi storage without harming the performance

Currently I am runing 5 vm on the iscsi storage (sql, terminal,ad)

I attach screen shoot taken from one of the vm guest with sql2005 that work heavily

Can I add more vm to the iscsi storage ?

Thanks

The number depends by the type of I/O of your VMs.

You have a single RAID5 group on 8 disk (which speed? 15k).

This is good for VMs with more read I/O, but could be wrong with VMs with high write I/O.

You can use iometer from a VM or montor your storage throughput to see when your are near your limit.

This is not the answer to your question, however it's related to disk performance.

You mentioned the single controller. By default the write cache is only activated for dual controller systems (for security reasons). If you have your storage connected to a reliable UPS you could (at your own risk) activate the write cache.

For further information take a look at this link

It's in German, but the settings and commands are clearly documented.
