VMs going inaccessible then accessible again

We have a new NFS Storage that is much faster than our previous appliances.

However I am migrating a machine. And all the offline VMs on this new datacenter keep going inaccessible. Then after a while they will be accessible again. Up to half of the offline VMs can be inaccessible at a time. Sometimes only 1-2 machines are.

It does not seem to be affecting online VMs. There do not appear to be having performance issues.

I am Running ESX 4.1 and vcenter.

Check (and send us if possible) the /var/log/vmkernel logs from your host. You SHOULD be having some communication issues with the NFS of maybe with local disks that may be affecting your storage layer.

What storage vendor are you using?  I know that NetApp changes some advanced settings for NFS datastores for optimized performance.  I put these options below.  You may want to give these a try.

Net/TcpipHeapSize --int-value 30

Net/TcpipHeapMax --int-value 120
NFS/HeartbeatMaxFailures --int-value 10
NFS/HeartbeatFrequency --int-value 20
NFS/HeartbeatTimeout --int-value 10
NFS/MaxVolumes --int-value 128
