Connection to vCenter VM with VMware Remote Console

Hallo,

as I found out how to connect quickly to a VM without using vSphere Client, I've got the problem not being able to connect to a VM within vCenter. The general usage of the VMware Remote Console (vmware-vmrc.exe) looks like this:

vmware-vmrc.exe -h "HOSTNAME OR IP(:PORT)" -u "USERNAME" -p "PASSWORD" "[Datastore] VM/VM.vmx".

This works fine while connecting to a single ESX host. But I'd like to connect to a vCenter, too, because it is connected with Active Directory, so I can use AD credentials and besides if a VM changes the host, vCenter stays the same.

I get the message "Error opening the remote virtual machine vCenter\[DATASTORE] VM/VM.vmx: The request refers to an unexpected or unknown type."

When do I need to mention the port, actually?

Besides, where do I find an overview of all parameters for VMRC and vSphere Client?

Thank you

Hi

I may be mistaken but having researched a little i'm 99% sure you can't use vmrc via the vcentre server you need to either connect via the esx host it is on.

Have a look at this discussion for some parameters.

Okay, now that I have to do it this way, to connect directly to the ESX host, which is the fewest privilege to only interact with the VM console. I added a user at ESX with a role, that has only "Console Interaction" checked, but it doesn't seem to be enough, while in vSphere it is enough? Which further right(s) do I need additionally for console interaction via VMRC?

hi

The read only role should be exactly what you want for this or edit the Virtual machine user role and remove the settings you don't want
