Esxi at v5.5 update 2: apply update3 then right to 3a or straight to 3a?

I read the release notes about update3a but I'm a little bit on this as I know patches are cumulative and I must end up at 3a but the size of the base update3 patch is ~600 meg and update3a is ~300 meg so if I apply right to 3a, what am I missing out on by not first applying the base update3 patch?

Or would it be better to do the 2 step upgrade applying update3, reboot, then apply update3a?

You can directly apply update 3a as this is derived on top of update 3,so directly applying upate 3a will contain all the latest VIB's'.
