Import Network Port Groups in vCenter

We have recently upgraded the vCenter client from version 6.7 to version 8. While adding hosts, the networks are not listed as earlier, which is causing VM migration failure.

Therefore, kind help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Some more details about your environment may help.

Not sure, but it could be related to the vDS version. See https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/8.0/vsphere-networking/GUID-330A0689-574A-4589-9462-14CA03...

Hi Andre,

Thanks for replying.

The worst part is we have no backup of DS. But we can see networks in the individual host. Can we import those networks to vcenter client?

Also check your DS version compatibility and if required upgrade to the compatible version:

Hi Sachchidanand,

We have upgraded vCenter without DS backup and now there are no Port groups in the vCenter. But we can see the port groups in individual ESXi hosts. Is there any way we can import those port groups from hosts to the vCenter client?

PS., Attached pics for better insight of the issue.

Hi Durga,

As I can see from the screenshot that the portgroups are of DS. In general when you add a host to vCenter, the standard switch along with the port groups are automatically added to the vCenter. As DS is the part of vCenter, not ESXi that's why you are facing this issue.

If you want to go with DS portgroups, then it's a case of vmware support, so open a ticket for that. OR see if anyone else helps on this.

For other workaround for now is to move your VMs from DS port groups to Standard Switch/port groups on individual esxi node, then add your host to the vCenter.

After that you can continue as it is, with the standard port groups or you can again create a DS on vCenter and move back to the DS.

Hi Sachchidanand,

Thank you for the clarification. Could you help me with the SOP for the workaround? Or is there any articles for the same?

Hi Durga,

Not every issue problem has a document or direct solution. Sometimes you have to check your infra and components and make a plan and then execute it step by step like you have to check your virtual switch connectivity and your uplink connectivity. Also you have to check how many uplinks you have?

You have to create a standard virtual switch and same number of port group (including the vlan) as already present on your DS. Then you have to shift your port group (on the VMs) as well as uplink to the new switch.

If you more than one uplink, it'll save your downtime by seting up the parallel network setup.
